Contemplative Reading

This site offers a simple practice: reading a single verse, slowly, more than once.

The method is inspired by an ancient tradition of contemplative reading — not reading for information, but reading for presence. The aim is not to understand the text intellectually, but to let it speak to you directly.

The four readings

First reading

Read the verse slowly. Notice if a particular word or phrase catches your attention. You don't need to choose — simply notice what stands out.

Second reading

Read the verse again. This time, notice what you feel. Not what you think about the verse, but what arises in you as you sit with it. A sensation, a memory, a mood.

Third reading

Read once more. Allow a response to form. This might be a resolution, a question, or simply a sense of recognition. Let it come without forcing.

Rest

Read the verse one final time. Then sit quietly. No question, no task. Simply remain with the words for a moment before returning to your day.

There is no right way to do this. The practice is simply to slow down, to read with attention, and to notice what happens when you do.

You may wish to write a few words after each reading — not as analysis, but as a way of staying present. These reflections are private and stored only on your device.

Read slowly. Return often.
